    Control of a scanner

I'm discussing with a client the possibility of converting their app to Lianja. One very important part of this app is the document management feature. They can scan documents via their Canon scanner and associate those documents with customer records, then pull them up and view them as needed. Could this be done with a web app? At the very least, I imagine you could scan and store them locally, then upload them to the server on which the web app resides, and then associate them with a customer record. That wouldn't be too bad, but right now they just locate the customer record and scan a document and it's automatically associated with that record. As always, the less work, the better, so I'm wondering how a web app might interface with a scanner attached to a local machine.

In fact yes, the standard Lianja attachments section is already implemented and works in the browser (Lianja Web Client) exactly as it does in the desktop product. (see lianjademo "Employee Information" page).

They would scan the documents into a known directory then all they do is click the "upload" icon in the action bar of the attachments section and select a document from the file selection dialog which is then uploaded and inserted into the attachments table with the parent->child key taken care of for you.

As the user navigates around the data, the attachments are displayed in a grid (just like they are in the desktop). Clicking the hyperlink opens them up in a new browser tab or window so that they can be viewed.

Users have the habit of picking the wrong file, or the right file in the wrong directory.

So the $64,000 question: will a browser-UI have the ability to pick a file from a local directory as a command? If so, creating a timer-based routine that looks for a "new" file in a given directory could greatly lessen the chances of error (most scanners can be set to stick their files in a particular place).

    thanks,

    Hank
