    What's happening in 2015

During 2014 we put a lot of effort into Web Apps and the Cloud Server as well as making many improvements and enhancements to the Lianja App Builder.

We are just about to release v1.3 and if you take 5-10 minutes of your valuable time and read through the roadmap you will see that our development was not just agile but jumped forward in leaps and bounds every month or so during 2014.

This is one of the advantages of working as a small team with constant feedback from the developer community.

My vision for Lianja has not wavered and I am more fired up than ever to sprint through 2015 and provide you with the best mobile development platform for business database apps.

I am now asking for some feedback from you all and would appreciate it if you could answer the following questions to help me decide on any adjustments to the roadmap for this year so I can prioritize development and other resources.

    1. What mobile operating system should we concentrate on first? iOS or Android?

    2. What functionality would you most like to see added into the Lianja App Builder for Lianja Desktop App development.

    3. What functionality would you most like to see added into the Lianja App Builder for Lianja Web App development.

    4. Would you be interested in online webinars and training courses?

    5. Having read through most of the documentation, what areas in the documentation confuse you or you think we should improve on?

You can respond here or email your responses to support@lianja.com.

And finally I'd like to wish you all a happy and successful new year.

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing you will be successful.
Help us help you be successful.

More thinking is needed. In meanwhile here is one quick answer (the thickness demonstrates priority for let us say first three):

I think that exposing LOM with full intellisense is number one. It will benefit in understanding Lianja and boost development.

    Hi Barry,

First - thank you for building Lianja.

    1. What mobile operating system should we concentrate on first? iOS or Android?

    I would prefer IOS.
    2. What functionality would you most like to see added into the Lianja App Builder for Lianja Desktop App development.

For desktop, I think a popupmenu would be very useful. For Example, I have a treegrid with a list of customers, locations, items. It's very intuitive to be able to right click, any of the customers or location or items and get a popup menu with "ADD, EDIT, DELETE etc"
    3. What functionality would you most like to see added into the Lianja App Builder for Lianja Web App development.
Collapsible widgets within a section. For example, I have a selected stock ticker in a dashboard. I may want to see historical trend information, or put/call information or current short position etc. A lot of little useful wigdets in the same section that I can expand and collapse to suit my need.
    4. Would you be interested in online webinars and training courses?

    Yes. Absolutely.

    Hi Herb,

Thanks for the feedback and all noted.

Can you explain what you mean by collapsible widgets within a section. Do you mean like an outlook style panel gadget or something different? Can you provide me with a sample screenshot? Email it if that's better for you.

    Hi Barry,

What functionality would you most like to see added into the Lianja App Builder for Lianja Desktop App development.
    From the Roadmap:
    - Visual Report Builder
    - Intellisense
    - Grouping Apps into a project

    New (Not Previously Mentioned)
    - Add a search to the app inspector to search for a specific section or control (or part of a control name).
(This would be more useful for canvas sections that may have numerous controls associated with it.)

    - Add the ability to jump to a specific function or procedure location rather than scrolling through the code to find it or through all of the find results.
(similar to Visual Studio's right click 'Definition' function).
(This is just something that could aid in programming and is not a priority (Perhaps this may be another aspect of intellisense???))

    Briefly mentioned in a ticket
    - Have some notification that an error occurred and to check the console for more information.
(Often times some processes stop running and you don't know why.
If you are constantly switching between the data workspace and the apps workspace (to test modifications), you may not realize an error occurred until some time later on.)

Would you be interested in online webinars and training courses?
    Yes I would be.
Hopefully a variety of subjects would be covered and for various skill levels (Beginner to advanced/more complex features)
I would also suggest recording the webinars and they could be placed in a webinar video section of the site.
That would be helpful in case you missed the webinar (possibly due to various timezones around the world) or wanted to review the discussion again.

Having read through most of the documentation, what areas in the documentation confuse you or you think we should improve on?
I think the wiki needs to be improved on. Many times a change is mentioned although when you go to apply the change, you can't find anything more about it.
Since not everyone has access to the beta versions, you could easily add 'This feature available starting in version xxx'.

Similarly, I also think that more information should be added to the release information.
There are many additions or changes listed although usually we have no idea how to access or implement these changes.
Because of this lack of knowledge, we may not be using Lianja to its full potential (and in some cases may be trying to duplicate a feature that has already been added).

    Hi Barry,

    1. What mobile operating system should we concentrate on first? iOS or Android?

For Web Apps (PhoneGap/Cordova): Android -- due to sheer numbers, and cost of devices. Also, Android uses aren't as picky about how apps work (PhoneGap is good; but mobile almost always runs better).

For Native, iOS would be my pick, for the same reasons cited above. However, if Android is quicker to get out, I would pick Android. When we can push out native apps running VFP code with disconnected data, the world will take notice. A lot of notice. So the sooner that capability gets out, the more business for all of us.

    2. What functionality would you most like to see added into the Lianja App Builder for Lianja Desktop App development.

Other than what is already on the roadmap, I would like to see an enhanced editor, along the lines of CodeMirrror (handy because it has no dependencies), with the following abilities:
    • Advanced intellisense (editor jumps to next parameter, displays information, you fill it it; jumps to next parameter, etc. -- this is available as a FOSS add-in to CodeMirror).
    • Pop-out editor windows -- so more than one doc can be viewed at a time
    • Variable-highlighting: when sitting on a variable, all variables in the current document that match are highlight (Native to CodeMirror: it's a flag)
    • Procedure/Method/Function tree to side of editor window, for jumping to a method without having to scroll and find it (like Document View in VFP; also like the Apatana Python Editor).
    • Document folding (I don't like long docs, but sometimes it makes more sense). This is native to CodeMirror.

    3. What functionality would you most like to see added into the Lianja App Builder for Lianja Web App development.

Other than what is in the roadmap:

    • https in CloudServer: I know it's a biggish job -- but would keep deployment of ISV apps much simpler in almost all our on-site deployments.

    4. Would you be interested in online webinars and training courses?

Possibly. I think it's a great idea to have them available.

    5. Having read through most of the documentation, what areas in the documentation confuse you or you think we should improve on?

I'll echo Cory on this: put the new stuff in their immediately, labelled with version (1.3, etc.). Just the other day you referenced a couple of grid methods that weren't listed there.

I would also suggest putting the roadmap a) by version for all 3 components; b) in reverse order for all current and being developed version. E..g., it would begin as of today with 1.3 (In Development), with sections for LAB, LSQL, and LCS; c) with future versions at the bottom, under "Future Versions", in ascending order.
    thanks,

    Hank

    Hi Hank,

    All noted.

With regards to the phonegap build service this is already on the roadmap. I was referring to native mobile.

hi all and happy new fantastic 2015.

I totally agree with Josip, Herb, Cory and Hank.

    In particular:
    From the Roadmap:
    - Visual Report Builder
    - Intellisense
    - Grouping Apps into a project
    - Ability to use custom UI classes in form and canvas sections

In addition I would like to emphasize:
ability to have the same "delegate" of section .. in the fields of grid (if is possible) or/and
ability to specify more than one column to search in "Autosuggestion" delegate and ability to specify the "LIKE" .. in addition to incremental search for "beginning" (all exposed.. :-) ).

This would greatly simplify the data entry .. I am very oriented ERP applications.

    Great job!
    Fabio

    PS:
Also this Christmas brought mom's Lasagna .. :-)

    Hi Barry,

Lianja migth be on a way to become a great tool, but it’s a long way to go for experienced developers.
We struggle forward, a lot of things don ‘t work as expected and/or are hard to find.

There are no forum-issue, no wiki's and no video about the most issues.

I would advise to document all stuff before continuing to version 2.0.
Otherwise many people are already lost in the wood and will never come back.

A few well-documented “real world” applications could help us a huge step forward.
Such an application will have 1 to many relations, lookup fields with composite keys etc..

    kind regards
    James
