Problems with ODBC data source and VFP 9 data

I've used the Lianja ODBC Manager to setup a connection to my VFP data and it tests out fine. I've setup a new database in the App Builder and used the option Create Virtual Tables from ODBC. It takes a a few minutes to complete and then I see all of my tables prefaced with "vt_". The problem is though that many of the tables, when clicked on, display a message say "File [vt_tablename] does not exist". A few tables are accessible - seems to be those with a very small number of fields. Is there something I missed?

Also, in testing a new form, it seems to run properly in all formats until I go into Web App View and Preview in Live Browser. This shows the page, but with no data, and a dialog box shows "Server Connection Lost. The server failed to respond." The strange thing is, all of the demo apps work properly in a browser preview. The common thread between my two issues may be that I am trying to work off of a VFP ODBC data source. At the moment, I don't have the luxury of changing back end databases.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi Matt,

Have a look at the Virtual Tables Troubleshooter - it may be the autoincrement field issue if you are using the VFP ODBC Driver.

Virtual Table support in the Web Client is on the Roadmap for v1.3. They are currently supported in the Desktop Client only.

    Regards,

The Lianja ODBC Manager is for connecting to Lianja SQL Server data.

For other data sources you need to use the ODBC driver specific to it.

in your case you need to use the VFP ODBC driver.

Ah, I didn't realize auto-inc fields don't work with the ODBC driver -or that virtual table support isn't part of the web client yet. Not a limitation of Lianja, but the ODBC driver's auto-inc issue rules out using native VFP tables for me. Is there a better way to work with existing VFP data?

    Thank you,
    -Matt

Thanks Barry. I didn't realize that. I did try using the Win32 ODBC driver for setting up a new DSN, but didn't have much luck with Lianja being able to use it. Although, from Yvonne's post, if auto-inc fields are not supported by the VFP ODBC driver, it's a moot point.

    Thanks,
    -Matt

    Hi Matt,

There is short discussion on other ODBC Drivers for VFP here if you have no option but to keep your data in VFP format. From Hank's reports of testing with these, I think it will depend on the complexity of the queries you need to perform and the speed required whether these will work for you.

There was also an earlier discussion about interested developers funding a Sponsored Feature for Lianja to support VFP indexes to allow VFP tables to be updated directly from Lianja.

    Regards,

    Yvonne

    Hi Yvonne,

I'm in the same boat as the earlier discussion about having a sponsored feature. A gradual cut over to Lianja is what I was hoping to do.

    I appreciate the info.
